New standard connector in North America
For several years, Tesla wanted to impose its standard on other car manufacturers. NACS connector (North American charging standard), allowing access to its network of Superchargers. A new agreement has just been signed with Stellantis group In this sense.
“Customers benefit when the industry aligns with open standards. We are pleased to announce our support and adoption of the SAE J3400 connector, an important step for all customers towards open and transparent charging.”Riccardo Stamatti, senior vice president of energy and charging at Stellantis, said on the occasion: “Our strategic plan ‘Dare Forward 2030’ puts customers at the center of open interoperability and freedom of mobility for all. This future will be enhanced by Ionna, our joint venture with six other OEMs, which will provide industry-leading high-power charging for all battery electric vehicles, regardless of brand. »
Several brands of the Stellantis group are interested
Even if the Stellantis group does not mention Tesla’s name, SAE J3400 connector corresponds well to the NACS connector of the American electric car manufacturer: more precisely, it is the name of an international standard classified by SAE International, the organization responsible for the development of industrial standards.
Stellantis actually reached an agreement with Tesla to use the NACS connector from 2025 in the USA and Canada, which will allow its customers to access the Tesla Supercharger network and thus offer a wider choice in terms of charging solutions for their electric vehicles. These include electric vehicles from Stellantis brands in North America: Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and RAM, but the group’s imported brands such as Alfa Romeo may also follow suit.
This announcement accompanies the launch announcement IonaAND fast charging network which is the result of the merger of 7 major car manufacturers, including Stellantis. By 2030, more than 30,000 charging points are planned, so they will be equipped with Combo CCS and NACS connectors.
List manufacturers that have adopted the NACS connector continues to grow: Stellantis brands join Nissan, Toyota, Lexus, Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, Scout, Ford, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Rivian, Volvo and Polestar.
