In the automotive sector, good news is quite rare at the moment. Between environmental standards, safety standards, questions about the future of electric jobs, slowing sales, or even the “car hunt” in certain cities, we wonder what else might be driving some down this path.

The picture is deliberately gloomy, but everything is not so catastrophic, because the appearance of the electric car also causes the arrival of a new wave of engineers and mechanics (or rather electricians …) who will strive to make the car of tomorrow even more virtuous.

On-the-job training is more attractive to students

Thus, the automobile continues to have undeniable appeal to younger generations, as demonstrated by the recent 2023-2024 academic year of the National Automotive Association (ANFA). This is evidenced by the figures published by the association a 4% increase in the number of students studying in the automotive sector. Out of a total of around 70,000 students, more than 40,000 have opted for work-based learning, underscoring the growing appeal of this learning pathway, which is often more formative thanks to an increased ‘on-the-ground’ presence. These data generally contradict the preconceived notion that the automotive sector is no longer attractive to young people.
ANFA statistics show a steady upward trend in numbers over several years. Indeed, the number of students studying trades such as mechanics, body work or sales has almost doubled over the past nine years. The most popular direction is car repair, which is covered by 60% of students. Passion for work and study continues: the number of young people choosing this method of study has increased by 6.2%. This option is particularly attractive due to its professional opportunities: 73% of 2022 graduates were employed six months after graduationcompared to just 46% in the traditional school route, according to ANFA.

Diversification and inclusion

Along with this growth, the automotive sector is witnessing a progressive diversification of the workforce. Although most of the workers are men, we are seeing an increase in female presence3,500 women studying 19% increase. They mainly focus on sectors such as body painting and motorcycle maintenance.
As the automotive industry moves towards electric vehicle dominance, ANFA is working to adapt initial training to prepare future professionals for the changes ahead.

While petrol and diesel engine failures continue to support the aftermarket, the move to electric requires a review of the skills required, including additional training in electrical systems, batteries and on-board technology.
