A fundamental right is under threat
Reducing road deaths: This is the case for this bill from environmental activist Karima Delli, who advocates “restrictive measures” aimed at strengthening the conditions of access to a driver’s license, as well as shortening its validity period. By the end of February 2024, it will be put to a vote in the European Parliament: if such a law were to be adopted, it could quickly put an end to one of our basic rightsthat driver’s license for life.
Indeed, under this project, the restoration of driver’s licenses will depend on every 15 yearsto one mandatory medical examination which aims to judge a person’s ability to drive.
The French government, through its Minister of Transport, nevertheless wanted to reassure us, saying a few months ago that “We are not supporters of the idea of an age license”. “When you’re an elderly person, especially in a rural area, you need a car”Clément Bohn clarifies.
Mandatory medical examination: a petition against this bill
However, if this law is passed at the European level, there is a good chance that it will also be applied to France when entry into force is planned for 2027. This is an unacceptable situation for associations of the protection of drivers, such as “40 million motorists”, which is launched petition resist it.
The association condemns “a blatantly anti-motorist measure that aims to set the expiration date of each user’s driver’s license”with consequences “detrimental for users who will be arbitrarily deprived of the right to drive a car”. Indeed, a driver’s license is essential to the daily life of many French people, especially in rural areas where public transport is non-existent or not suitable.
In addition, systems already exist for certain situations that require a medical consultation: special driving licenses (large truck, public transport, etc.) already require a medical examination for their renewal, while motorists who have committed dangerous offenses are subject to a medical and psychotechnical examination. tests to test their abilities and therefore possibly limit their right to drive.
40 million motorists therefore invites opponents of this project to sign a petition called “Don’t touch my license”.
