BYD is one of the rising stars of the automotive industry, and in particular electric ones. The numbers speak for themselves: in 2023 the manufacturer sold 3.02 million cars, including 1.4 million all-electric models. It now trails Tesla, which fell short of its 2023 goal of 2 million units sold. Hell of a track record, at that BYD has been producing cars only since 2003 ! So what is the secret to this success? This is primarily on the side of its founder, Wang Chuanfu. Wang Chuanfu is a Chinese entrepreneur who showed interest in technology and innovation from an early age. After receiving degree in chemistry from Peking University in 1990 he started his career as battery technology researcherspecializes, in particular, in chemistry and metallurgy.

Constant search for innovations

In 1995, he founded BYD“Biyadi” at the time, but today “Build Your Dreams”, with a purpose to develop batteries for electric cars. The company initially focused on manufacturing batteries and electronic components, but has gradually diversified into other sectors such as automobiles, solar energy, construction and information technology. But it’s true his entry into the automotive industry which made BYD the giant it is today. Wang Chuanfu pioneered the development of electric vehicles and lithium-iron-phosphate batteries, leading BYD with its now famous Blade battery, renowned for its durability and high resistance. This is definitely Van’s commitment sustainability and innovation which made BYD one of the world’s leading players in the field of electric vehicles.

Significant international expansion

Under Wang’s leadership, BYD has become the world’s largest battery manufacturer and the leader in the electric car market. The company has expanded its international presence through partnerships and collaborations on various scales, including Toyota, Faurecia and Daimler (with whom he created premium brand Denza, coming soon to Europe). Almost 30 years after its founding, Wang Chuanfu is still the boss of BYD : he is its president and CEO. With him, BYD almost became an industrial giant 600,000 employeesand understood a turnover of 79 billion euros in 2023. The group multiplies projects, brands (Yangwang, Fangchenbao, etc.) and innovations. In France, it is launched this year the Seal electric sedan and the Seal U electric SUV. Something suggests that the story will not end there…
