After the charging station scam, here comes the fake road ticket scam. The case also resembles CPF fraud as the methodology is the same. Perhaps this is what inspired our two main characters, two 19-year-old boys who managed to deceive at least 1,700 people as reported by our colleagues at Le Parisien.

The method couldn’t be simpler. They used a fake site to pay fines and pretended to be the National Agency for Automated Offense Processing (Antai). Their modus operandi allowed, in addition to refunding money, to collect personal information.

Scam scenario

These two individuals, specialists in “phishing” or online phishing, began their fraudulent activities in the fall of 2022. Presenting himself under the name Antay, they contacted their victims via SMS, redirecting them to a fraudulent website.

On this fake website, people were encouraged to provide their bank information and personal details under the pretext of paying a fine. The data obtained in this way was then used for online purchases or resold to other criminals.

The case attracted the attention of investigators of the Cybercrime Brigade (BL2C) of the Judicial Police of Paris from the fall of 2023. When confronted with this large-scale scam, the police discovered that the fraudsters managed to collect more than 1,700 bank card numbers. along with the necessary identifying information. The financial loss amounted to about 19,000 euros.

No sms, only letters

Between October 2022 and July 2023, the two young men used their scheme to gather information necessary for their crime. They used 78 of these bank card numbers to make online purchases. The police managed to find the electronic traces of the criminals, whose locations took place in Paris and Roubaix, respectively.

On December 19, 2023, one of the suspects was called to the premises of the judicial police, and the second was detained at home. During the hearing, the young fraudsters admitted that they were driven by greed. Despite their confessions, they were released to the court scheduled for April 3.

In all cases, and this is worth remembering, if you get a fine, know it Antai never sends SMS to contact you. Requests for fines are always sent by official mail, with the famous little stamp at the top right “République Française” which often means you owe money!
