This is a law that risks having big consequences in the car market across the English Channel. Indeed, as stated in the preamble, the United Kingdom requires c 2024 year what 22% of cars sold manufacturers to be zero-emission cars. This law also takes into account the sale commercial vehicles has height 10%.

A strong decision by the government

The government did not bow down to pressure carried out by certain manufacturers based in the United Kingdom who were opposed to this law. We know thanks to colleagues from Guardian that subjects Toyota, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) AND Nissan in the United Kingdom called for a delay in implementing new zero-emission vehicle laws. The latter also planned end of sales of thermal machines in 2030. The government of Rishi Sunak in September 2023 conceded and postponed the ban until 2035.

As for this new law about minimum quota sale of electric cars, it was really voted. If in 2024, this quota is set at 22%, the latter will increase every year to reach 80% in 2030 and 100% in 2035. And woe to manufacturers who do not follow this rule. If the plan is not implemented, the builders will have to pay the state £15,000 (17,395 euros) per polluting vehicle sold above the limits.

Transport Minister Mark Harper says:

These laws provide certainty for manufacturers, benefit drivers by giving them more options, and help grow the economy by creating skilled jobs.

Some manufacturers stand up!

As you can imagine, some manufacturers do not take this law kindly! Take the example of toyota, the manufacturer that sold the most cars in the world in 2022. Toyota’s UK division said:very worried“. By focusing on the development of hybrid cars, Toyota really took a significant delay in the development of 100% electric cars.

The same applies JLR Group. The latter believes it was “far certain” that the various manufacturers selling their vehicles in the UK would be able to meet their targets. According to the group, the goals set by this law in the first years are unattainable.

To calm the situation, the government intervened some provisions of the adopted law. This includes provisions that allow producers who fail to meet their targets in one year to make up for them in the next. At the same time, more and more electric cars are being sold. You also have an exception for manufacturers who sell less than 2500 cars per year. The latter will have to wait 2030 year fulfill various obligations.

Others rejoice!

If some people don’t want this new regulation, at least not in this context, other manufacturers rejoice. This especially applies to Americans from You are here and with Ford. Guardian This was announced by Elon Musk, the boss of Tesla. These are the rules for the latter are not sufficient stimulate the development of the electric car market. Musk believes that while these goals may appear ambitious at first glance, it is quite possible that they are easily overflows.

As for the Germans, volkswagen, The UK body said the targets set by Rishi Sunak’s government were “ambitious but appear broadly achievable”.

Future arrival in France?

The question we can ask ourselves now is whether this type of quota could appears in our regions ? No statement on this matter was made either from France or from Europe. On the other hand, if this law will be in force increase sales of electric cars in the United Kingdom, it is possible that certain governments in Europe will be inspired by what is being done in the United Kingdom.

So this is something to look out for…
