The CEO and co-founder of Nio, William Lee, personally tested the new product solid state battery (SSB) of 150 kW/h sedan Nio ET7 : thus he was able to cover the distance 1,044 km with a full battery charge, and at the end of the experiment, it even had 3% autonomy left, which allowed it to travel about 30 km more.
The event was broadcast live on the Chinese social network Weibo: the trip lasted at least 14 hours, departing from the Nio battery exchange station in Shanghai. Before this experiment, William Lee clarified that this new battery with a capacity of 150 kWh had already been tested on the road, installing a new record for a serial electric car, 1145 km of autonomy.
Nio ET7: record autonomy for an electric car
92% of its journey, or 957 km, was covered by the ET7 thanks to the Nio Navigate-on-Pilot+ (NOP+) autonomous driver assistance system at a maximum speed of 90 km/h for better control of energy consumption, which is reflected in 13.2 kW/100 km In average. The car drove for a total of 12.4 hours, without interruptions, at an average speed of 83.9 km/h and in fairly harsh temperatures of -2 to 12°C.
This new solid-state battery (SSB) with a capacity of 150 kWh is produced by WeLion New Energy Technology, a Chinese manufacturer based in Beijing: it was three years in the making and was unveiled during the Nio Day 2020 event, where the brand launched its first Nio electric sedan ET7.
In addition to this record autonomy of more than 1000 km, battery replacement stations from Nio allows its customers to replace the battery in just three minutes and drive an additional 1000 km with each operation!
Three battery options for the Nio
Now Nio offers three battery options for your cars: NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) batteries. 75 kWh and 100 kWhas well as this new SSB (Solid State Battery) model from 150 kW/h. Despite its larger capacity, this new SSB battery has the same dimensions as other battery packs, allowing it to be installed and replaced in any model of the brand.
The new 150 kWh battery will be mass-produced spring 2024. However, it should be noted that the 150kWh SSB battery will have a much higher price tag: According to Nio President Qin Lihong, it could cost the Nio ET5! In China, this sedan costs 298,000 yuan, which is equivalentabout 38,100 euros.
But to allow all its customers to benefit from it, Nio also offers battery rental : this way it will be possible, for example, to choose a 150 kWh battery for a few months to make exceptional long trips, instead of paying for it for a year.
