Social leasing: is it really a “New Year’s gift” from the state? Auto Plus news in your smartphone Auto Plus news in your inbox

This was one of Emmanuel Macron’s pre-election promises regarding his re-election: to make electric mobility accessible to as many French people as possible. For this, it was necessary to encourage manufacturers (through subsidies and purchase assistance) to offer electric model for 100 euros per month for long-term rental, or “leasing” in English. So far, only a few models have been eligible, with the rare Fiat 500e, Renault Twingo and Dacia Spring having to meet several conditions to fall below the symbolic €100 threshold. All this will soon change: The President of the Republic is launching his “social leasing” with great fanfare today. and finally clarifies the contours of this event and the models that are suitable for it…

Some limitations in choosing a model

To rent a new model, the car must receive a minimum environmental score (new scale of environmental bonuses/malus 2024), have a base price of less than 47,000 euros AND weighs less than 2.4 tons. For example, (according to the list released by the government today) the Renault Zoé, Twingo, Mégane and Scénic E-Tech, electric Peugeot 208, 308, 2008 and 4008, electric Opel Corsa and Mokka, Fiat 500e, Jeep Avenger, Tesla Model Y, Volkswagen ID.3 and Volvo C40.

Among others, because the list includes about fifty modelswith others coming soon to expand on it, like the new Citroën ë-C3 and the upcoming Renault 5 and Volkswagen ID.2. “The goal is to help you buy electric cars made here.” The head of state clarified, publishing this list, which excludes all Chinese modelsand most models (even French ones) are assembled in Asia.

But the main restrictions on compliance

Is this really the flagship event we’ve been waiting for that will allow as many people as possible to finally get the opportunity to enjoy electric mobility? Yes, because it is a more than desirable promotion, but there are still many conditions that must be met… In particular, you must have basic taxable income per unit is less than EUR 15,400, live at a distance of more than 15 kilometers from the place of work and get there by their own vehicle (and therefore provide a certificate from the employer or an affidavit). But that’s not all. It is also necessary to justify drive at least 8,000 kilometers per year by car within the framework of his professional activity.

Mission Impossible? The state warns that this system will be implemented very gradually and within the limits of available reserves (20,000 deliveries in 2024 before increasing power). To find out if you qualify, a special platform has just opened and allows simulation. There the lease term must be at least 3 years.
