Our colleagues at Automobile Magazine have just highlighted some interesting statistics: in 2024, fines will apply to almost 42% of new thermal cars. This is five points more than in 2023.
This should add up to more than 763,000 cars sold in 2024, with a staggering penalty increase over three years, almost 80%. According to the Senate report, the current average fine “will be at a level slightly below 1000 euros”.
Several French cars will be fined
Specifically, 17.3% of new buyers will pay between €50 and €240, 13.7% between €260 and €740, 7.5% between €818 and €1,761, and finally 3.6% at least €1,901. According to the report, only the Peugeot 308 and 3008 will see French car fines, with the Alpine A110 being slightly overlooked.
Approved for 152 g/km CO2 (up to 158 depending on options) in the base version and up to 160 for the S and GT versions, the penalty increases. You will have to pay between €2,544 and €4,279 in environmental fines to offer you a new tri-color sports car, while in 2023 it will cost between €1,761 and €3,119.
The heaviest models are affected
For its part, Dacia Sandero, the queen of sales to individuals, will receive more than double depending on the version and increase from 100 to 210 euros. However, this increase is contained and should not greatly affect its sales.
Owners of heavy vehicles will mainly have to pay due to the weight penalty. As mentioned in our columns recently, the penalty will be triggered from 1.6 tonnes instead of 1.8 tonnes today. In the next year, 10% of vehicles should fall to it.
