That’s it, that’s it the end of the Renault-Nissan Mitsubishi alliance ! Created by Renault-Nissan in 1999, this joint venture (majority owned by Renault) introduced a great deal of synergy between the two manufacturers: sharing platforms, engines and plants, expanding European, Indian and South American ranges. launch of project Kwid etc. But in fact, this “union” was not the only one. With Renault having 43.4% of the market share in Nissan and only 15% of Renault’s share in Nissan, this was very one sided in favor of Renault. “Discontent” has increased tenfold since the Carlos Ghosn case in 2018. The two sides have since rebalanced their joint holdings to 15% AND closed the joint purchasing center (RNZO).

Renault and Mitsubishi, hand in hand

But we often forget the third of the group: Mitsubishi Motors ! It entered the alliance in 2016 thanks to Nissan, which owns 34% of its shares. To restart in Europe, Renault gave him two of its most famous models : Clio and Captur, which became respectively Colt and ASX in the Nippon range. The latter should help Renault in Southeast Asia (perhaps in pickups?), where it has proven itself well. The end of the alliance, the end of the partnership? No, only the legal structure is gone, and otherwise Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi will continue to work hand in hand. Thus, the next electric Nissan Micra will be based on the Renault platform (late CMF-EV) and assembled in France… What about Mitsubishi? In terms of electrification, the manufacturer lags behind…

An electric Mitsubishi SUV is being prepared

In fact, he announced in October to invest 200 million euros in Ampere, a new Renault Group company dedicated to electric vehicles. The synergy must be even stronger than we thought, because now we know Renault will assemble an electric SUV on behalf of Mitsubishi ! It was the director of the group, Luca de Meo, who confirmed this information: this future model will be placed in segment C and collected in ElectriCity of Douai (59). Knowing this, there is no longer any doubt about the model that will become its basis: the new Renault Scénic E-Tech, also collected on the Doue site. Now it remains to be seen whether Mitsubishi will puzzle a little more than on the Colt and ASX to to offer a model that is really different from the Losange model…
