We no longer represent you Austral, this family crossover that joined the Renault lineup in 2022 to quickly replace the Kadjar and Koleos, with rather mixed success. Started with a clean slate Renault applied its new standards of style and technology as presented by the electric Mégane to finally launch an offensive worthy of the name in the compact segment (C), Europe’s most promising. Muscular look, sporty silhouette, refined interior : Austral presents itself as an interesting counter-offer to its compatriots 3008, C5 Aircross and DS 7. Its catalog includes soft hybrids 12V (1.3L 140 or 160 hp) and 48 V (1.2l 130 hp), as well as a “full hybrid” engine based on the block 1.2-liter gasoline, available in 160 and 200 hp.
How much does an entry-level Austral cost?
It’s true that when we talk to you or present a model to you, we’re often talking about mid-range or even top-of-the-line versions. But on the contrary how much is “Cheap Austral” referring to the affordable version? These days, saving money often means sacrificing comfort, equipment or safety features. But, and this is a hopeful moment, unlike what we could see a few years ago, affordable options no longer mean sloppy aesthetics. You see, basic black plastic bumpers, no caps, headlight designs stripped down to their simple practical function, etc.
In Austral’s case, Renault has been economical to keep the “really useful” essentials, of course, making some sacrifices. Its range starts with Evolution trim, associated with the 1.2 48V petrol engine (mild hybrid) 130 horsepower, which is transmitted to the wheels through a mechanical gearbox. The starting price in France for this configuration is 35,000 euros.
And once on board?
Of course, at first glance, this Austral is not the most pleasant. But let’s be tolerant, he is not disgusting either. No black plastic on the bumpers or door handles like we’ve seen in the past. They are flesh-colored! The drives have to be satisfied with the 17-inch format, but it does not sound “cheap”. Inside, though, and that’s what we’re interested in here, the presentation is simpler. Gray fabric upholstery, all-black doors and dashthere is little or no ornamentation, chrome or seductive decorative elements.
But at the technological level, we still find fully digital instruments and infotainment system9 and 12 inches, respectively, with R-Link multimedia system, two-zone air conditioner, electric windows on all four doors, as well as front and rear USB ports. Eventually, this Austral Evolution is “doing its job”. Of course, it’s not necessarily a favorite in terms of style, but it has nothing to be ashamed of in its equipment or the level of comfort it offers. A pragmatic optionas you’d expect from an entry-level model.
