The Mazda MX-5 ND, on sale in France since 2015, is not yet ready to make a significant retreat. Indeed, even if the next generation doesn’t succumb to the sirens of electrification (at least not 100%…), the current version continues to appeal to fans of small, affordable sports cars.
For more than eight years of career, the Mazda MX-5 has undergone some improvements, including a slight increase in power. First introduced in Japan, this restyling will soon be coming to France as well, and it goes a bit further than the previous updates as there are some aesthetic changes.
Discreet but noticeable improvements
On the outside, the front bumper is slightly different, and the daytime running lights are now located in the headlights, rather than on the sides of the grille. The inside of the grille also changes with the addition of sensors that enable adaptive cruise control, a new feature for this model. The most observant will also notice small changes in the rear lights with a 3D design. New discs are also included.
Inside, the changes are a little more noticeable, p the new 8.8-inch touchscreen we’ve already seen in the recent Mazda2 and CX-3. This is a very good thing as the current screen was starting to show the weight of the years and to make matters worse, it was not touch sensitive. The instrument cluster has also been changed, and a new beige color can be selected for the upholstery and lower part of the center console.
All modifications apply to both models with a soft canvas top and models with a retractable RF hard top.
Sportier Mazda MX-5?
In terms of mechanics, there are also changes. Mazda says the limited-slip differential on the rear axle has been revised, and the ESP now benefits from a “Track” mode. Finally, the calibration of the electric power steering has also been changed.
Under the hood, a 1.5-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine develops four horsepower and develops 132 to 136 hp in Japan It remains to be seen whether the European version will benefit from this as well. 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a capacity of 184 hp. still there
These facelifted versions will be available in Japan and Australia in mid-January. In France, this version should arrive sometime in 2024.
