Located in Ingolstadt, new Audi Automotive Safety Center (AFZ) is the most important German development center for passive safety brands, with approx 100 employeesand tools for development and crash testing in multiple configurations.

Audi: the complete safety center of the car

After three years of operation, the new Audi safety center opened its doors as part of the inauguration of the IN-Campus technology park in Ingolstadt, Germany, with 2500 m² crash arenaas well as runways with a total length of 250 meters, which allow for high-speed tests, as well as right-angle collisions.

In the center of this arena a 100 ton emergency unit you can organize and rotate, experiment with all types of crash tests. Before each new car is brought to market, Audi will run a large number of crash scenarios to ensure the safety of its vehicles. Like any crash test laboratory, the site is equipped with high-speed cameras to record all tests performed and analyze the results.

More and more demanding crash tests

A dummy lab, component test stands, workshops and offices complete the building. In particular, there are more than 60 crash test dummies different, from an 18-month-old child to an adult weighing 102 kg. These models are delivered to 150 sensors, to collect useful data during testing. with 3D scanners are used to analyze deformations after accidents.

With such a technological arsenal, practically all types of accidents incidents encountered on the road can be simulated, such as head-on collisions, side collisions or collisions with pedestrians. Tens of thousands of crash simulations and more than 60,000 calculations are performed every month to design Audi’s bodywork to the highest safety standards.

This new automotive safety center replaces the previous Audi collision room, which was also located in Ingolstadt and had been in use since 1970. It has been designed to be scalable and thus adapt to future developments in new technological requirements as well as standards and regulations of different markets around the world.
