This is a new manufacturer taking Tesla’s side: the American electric car maker really wants to impose its own NACS connector (North American charging standard), allowing access to its network of Superchargers. A new agreement with Nissan has just been signed.

“The adoption of the NACS standard underlines Nissan’s commitment to making electric mobility even more accessible as we pursue our Ambition 2030 long-term vision for greater electrification”said Jeremy Papin, president of Nissan Americas: “We are pleased to provide access to thousands of additional fast chargers for Nissan EV drivers, adding confidence and convenience when planning long journeys. »

Nissan: Charging adapter, then NACS port

Nissan did reach an agreement with Tesla to use the NACS connector from 2025 in the USA and Canadawhich will allow customers of the Japanese manufacturer to access the Tesla Superchargers network, and thus offer a wider choice in terms of charging solutions for their electric vehicles.

This adoption will be done in two phases: from next year, Nissan will provide customers with the Nissan Ariya NACS charging adapter, in addition to the CCS1 (Combined Charging System 1) port for fast DC charging. This will allow them to connect to charging stations equipped with NACS sockets.

subsequently from 2025Nissan will start selling electric cars directly equipped with a NACS port, on the markets of America and Canada. Thanks to this equipment, charging in the Tesla Supercharger network will be transparent and convenient for users, who will benefit from an extensive network of public fast charging points based on Tesla terminals.

More and more supporters of the NACS connector from Tesla

It was in November 2022 that Tesla offered its signature charger for set a new standard, which was named NACS. As an argument, the American manufacturer stated that its connector is more compact and easier to use, and Tesla cars with the NACS connector already make up the majority of the electric vehicle market.

Nissan is the first Japanese automaker to announce support for Tesla’s NACS standard, but before that, in May 2023, Ford decided to use the NACS connector on its electric vehicles, followed in recent weeks by General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Rivian, Volvo or even Polestar.

Last month, SAE International, the organization responsible for developing industry standards, announced that it would begin a standardization process for the NACS connector, which will be called SAE J3400.
