
The name remains, but the philosophy: Is smart still smart? Previously limited to mini city cars, with the highly acclaimed Fortwo launched in 2002, the brand was purely European. Born in Germany it was thanks to the Swiss Nicolas Hayek assembly in France in Hambach (57) and widespread throughout the Old Continent. Since then, production has moved to China, and the Smart is now there joint venture of Mercedes-Benz (founder of Smart) and Geely Group. The future is now 100% electric, and not just for city cars or minis. THE SUV and larger models should ultimately provide the bulk of sales. Because they crashed in 2022, only 20,500 units were distributed worldwide (-46%). The model that should embody its update, Smart #1, begins its first full year in 2023.
Everything for electrics, everything for crossovers
It B-segment electric crossover which, in particular, competes with the BMW iX1, Volvo XC40 Recharge and Mercedes EQA. Its design is still the work of the Germans, but all its technical part was delegated to Geely. Therefore, it is assembled on the Chinese SEA platform, which is also present in many other brands of the group (Volvo, Lynk&Co, Polestar, Zeekr, etc.). It is offered in two engine variants. Classic traction with a capacity of 272 horsepower for 343 Nm of torque, which provides the beginning and heart of the range. And also a more powerful “sports” version prepared by Brabus. It is about a four-wheel drive, which develops 428 horsepower for 543 Nm of torque. Its 66 kWh battery makes it possible autonomy of about 440 kilometers (on the traction version).

Today, Smart enhances its first electric crossover with a New version. Called Pulse, it’s also four wheel drive. So what is the difference with Brabus? Pulse #1 will fill in the missing space: the top of the range. Brabus for sport, Pulse for luxury yes. This new finish is standard 360° camera, tinted glass roof, hands-free tailgate and central 10-inch touchscreen. Power information has not yet been entered. The battery (with a heat pump) has a capacity of 66 kWh and a charging capacity of up to 150 kW. It will be available for booking in a few weeks French tariffs are not yet known.
