Caterham will also soon have its own electric sports car. The British brand has announced via teaser Project V, its first battery-powered model, which will be unveiled on Wednesday, July 12, and will make its first public appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
The British manufacturer defines Project V as “easy and pleasant to drive” and like it “The very essence of a rear-wheel drive sports car”. Strong statements for a model that will undoubtedly be one of the historical turning points for the brand.
Lightness is the key word
The photo, released as a teaser, shows the silhouette of a mid-engined sports car with a mid-cabin cabin, a squat “stern” and a very aerodynamic front end. As such, Project V will be completely different from the Seven, the most iconic model (and currently the only one) in the entire Caterham range.
The first information about Project V was released by the CEO of the brand, Bob Leishli, in an interview with Autocar last fall. The car will be developed on the company’s platform and designed for an electric power plant.
As the teaser promises, the car will focus on lightness, with weight about 700 kgthanks to only two seats and numerous carbon fiber components.
Created by Caterham’s chief designer, Anthony Giannarelli, it features a completely new design language for the British sports car brand. Project V will be produced by Italdesign in its Italian factories.
Built for the track
According to the brand, Project V will be a sporty “20-15-20”. What does it mean ? This is a term specific to sports electrics and may become more popular in the future.
It just means that the car can be used for 20 minutes at high intensity on the track, then stopped for 15 minutes for a quick charge, then back on the track for another 20 minute session.
The brand’s aim would be to produce at least 1,000 examples per year, with a price tag higher than the seven, which currently stands at around €42,000 in the base version.
