Driver’s license: new rules will appear in 2023. News from Auto Plus in your smartphone. News from Auto Plus in your inbox

Since its inception, driver’s licenses have undergone significant changes over the decades. We’re thinking, for example, of the arrival of points-based driving and escorted driving a few years ago. Not to mention the fact that now it can be obtained from the age of 18, and earlier – from the age of 21. The government even plans to make it available from the age of 17 or even 16. Driving lessons may also change, as the 20 hours requirement may soon cease to apply. But that’s not all, because another development is planned for the owners of the little pink paper.

A new measure

At the moment, each country sets its own driving license rules and therefore they are not really harmonized at the European level. But that should change soon, as it could even happen in 2023, as German website Merkur.de explains. The latter does announce that the pink paper should, in particular, go digital. He specifies that “QR code is also considered for the driver’s license control card instead of the current chip to make it more secure against unauthorized access“. Enough to avoid fraud and fake permits, especially for those who lost it due to violations.

international rules

But that’s not all, because driving bans can also be standardized. According to the site, ” Prohibition of driving spoken in Italy will then also be used in Germany“. In addition, maximum blood alcohol levels should be common to all European countries to guarantee better road safety and facilitate checks. Finally, our colleagues also explain that ” driver’s license data of all EU citizens must be stored in the database pan-European“.
