Ring road of Paris: will soon limit the speed to 50 km/h? News from Auto Plus in your smartphone News from Auto Plus in your mailbox

This is information that has been circulating for years and could be confirmed very soon, especially with the 2024 Olympics. As you probably know, the ring road, as well as several main roads in the Parisian region, will have reserved lanes for accredited vehicles.

Throughout the Île-de-France, these areas can only be used by athletes, rescuers and journalists during the day. And among the corresponding roads, there is obviously a device. Most of the ring road will be reduced to three lanes. Thus, there will be a reserved lane in both directions between Porte de Vanves and Porte de Bercy.

Big changes are expected in the device

Will everything go back to normal after the Olympics? The answer is no, as this lane will be reserved for soft mobility and car sharing. And this is probably not the only novelty on the device. Indeed, according to Francois Voutdirector of roads of the city of Paris, “One possibility is that when the reserve lanes are activated, we drive the entire ring road at a speed of 50 km/h”.

Another option, which the city hall is considering, is to reduce this speed to only 50 km/h. when the dedicated channel is active‘, according to a presentation made as part of the debate on the start of consultations on this town hall project, planned as a legacy of the 2024 Olympic Games.

In order to reduce pollution, this lane, intended for sharing cars, taxis and public transport, will indeed be activated on the left lane. “during traffic jams”that is, in the morning from 6:30 to 11:00, then in the evening from 15:30 to 20:00, weekdays and/or weekendsaccording to the starting proposal of the mayor’s office.

The city hall wishes to reduce the speed, which has already reduced it from 50 to 30 km/h almost everywhere within the city walls. “to limit the risk of an accident associated with too great a speed difference with the right lanes, in particular when changing lanes”.

See you at the end of 2024

Will it really make much of a difference? Not in absolute terms, since, according to the city hall, the average speed on the ring road, where more than a million trips are registered every day, is around 50 km/h during the day and 30 to 45 km/h during peak hours. Only at night do cars exceed 50 km/h, and the average speed is around 60 km/h.

The opening of the reserve lane is planned for the end of 2024 for its northern part, the southern part (between the gates of Bercy and Sèvres) is planned for mid-2025. So far, 90% of comments posted since Monday morning on the consultation site have given a negative view of the project.
