Affordable electric cars, to put it mildly, do not drive on the streets. Only Dacia Spring, with a price tag of around 20,000 euros, excluding environmental bonuses, is presented at affordable prices. All other electric models trade quite widely above €30,000 without bonus.
But over the next few years, we will see more and more “affordable” electric models, even if this concept remains quite relative. From Renault’s side, the electric R5 will arrive next year and will be introduced for around €25,000, while Tesla continues to wait with a possible Model 2, also sold for under €30,000.
Volkswagen is preparing heavy artillery
From Volkswagen, the recent presentation of the ID.2all concept car confirms the arrival of an electric city car equivalent to the Polo, less expensive, with a starting price of less than 25,000 eurosexcluding environmental bonus.
And during the presentation of the concept, the German manufacturer went even further, announcing after the ID.2, an even cheaper electric model, about 20,000 euros. If you follow Volkswagen’s logic with its electric models, it should be the ID.1, the model that is supposed to replace the aging e-up!.
Dacia Spring in sight?
The head of the German manufacturer confirmed its starting price, namely 20,000 euros, which is enough to eclipse the Spring, whose prices have risen significantly in recent years. And Dacia currently has no plans for other affordable electric models, as the electric Sandero is not expected before 2028.
According to a Volkswagen press release, this hypothetical ID.1 should not arrive before 2026. By then, other electric cars at this price will surely appear, especially from Chinese manufacturers. MG, for example, will have the MG3 in boxes with a starting price of less than €20,000.
