At Mercedes, we are preparing to start a deep restructuring of the assortment, but not only. It’s an entire ecosystem that needs to evolve as well, particularly with the advent of the electric car, a focus on customer experience, and better control of its sales with fewer dealers and more agents.

Therefore, the manufacturer’s catalog will change, niche products will disappear, namely those whose volume does not necessarily justify their presence in the assortment. So, several station wagons, coupes and convertibles will gradually retire without replacement.

But, according to our German colleagues at Handelsblatt, even if the range is reduced, it will not prevent the arrival of new models, starting with the “mini” Mercedes G-Class.

Same spirit, but technically different

According to the first rumors, the project of this new model is personally managed by German CEO Ola Kellenius, and its presentation should take place around 2026. All we know for now is that it won’t be called the “GLG” and that it won’t be mechanically related to the G-Class.

This new model will not have a chassis with spars and the ground clearance will be lower. In short, it will be a G-Class “in spirit”, but one that will remain distinctly recognizable with its very boxy lines and off-road attributes. So Mercedes could take inspiration from Ford with its Bronco and Bronco Sport. The first is an uncompromising SUV, the second is a more traditional SUV.

Electric, but not only

The “baby G-Class” could be born on the new MMA platform from Mercedes, which will be used for the future CLA, CLA Shooting Brake, GLA and GLB from 2024. This architecture will support 800-volt architecture allows fast chargingbatteries of a new generation and new software developed in-house.

This platform will not only be used to accommodate electric motors. So, this means that this hypothetical G-Class could also be offered in a petrol or diesel version, at least for some markets. But before that, the news surrounding the G-Class is focused on a 100% electric version called EQG, which is planned for next year.
