In the coming weeks, Google will release a new “eco-route” planning function. in the GPS navigation program Google Maps, in several countries, including France. A feature already in use in the United States, Canada and Germany, among others.

The more economical the route, the less fuel consumption and CO2 emissions2 your car will be low. Since its launch, Google has claimed that the feature has reduced emissions from more than 500,000 tons of CO2which is equivalent to 100,000 withdrawn from circulation internal combustion cars.

Google Maps: greener routes

Based on several parameterssuch as the type of road (city, county, highway), speed, steepness of slopes or even traffic density, Google Maps will calculate whether a slower route can offer a greener alternative. In addition to route duration, the mobile app will soon show potential fuel savings.

The calculation also takes into account other parameters, such as the type of engine of your car: petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric. Indeed, Google Maps believes that a diesel car will consume less on the highway, and a hybrid engine will be more efficient in the city.

Google Maps: A feature that can be turned off

Google, however, did not specify whether this new feature will also be offered in its community navigation app Waze, but all indications are that it will be. For people who don’t want to use this feature, it will always be there you can disable the function planning of the “ecological route”.

By default, Google Maps takes fuel economy into account on suggested routes. As a rule, the fastest route is also the most economical. If you turn this feature off, you’ll still get the fastest route, but Google Maps will no longer take fuel consumption into account.
