Fuel discount: foreigners flock to our service stations Auto Plus news in your smartphone Auto Plus news in your inbox

For several days, French motorists can take advantage of the 30-cent discount offered by the government on fuel. Good news, after a long and very difficult months, thanks to very strong growth, which we owe a lot to war in Ukraine. Indeed, the price of oil then skyrocketed, which directly affected the amounts paid at the pump. Fortunately, a small increase from the state, first by 18 cents and then by 0.30 euros, does a lot of good for drivers, and in particular for professionals. Some did have to cut their trips short and the fuel budget was too high. Fortunately, a small government discount came, which pleased motorists.

Foreigners also win

But French drivers are not the only ones to benefit from this promotion. Indeed, many foreign motorists also drive to our service stations. A find for the latter, especially since German government ended the discount of 30 cents on gasoline and 14 cents on diesel fuel, which led to a sharp increase in prices. However, this situation does not suit everyone. Indeed, a few days ago Loic Hervé, the centrist senator from Haute-Savoie, declared that ” the national budget should not finance the gas station of our Swiss neighbors […] This is money thrown out the window“. But if the state really loses money on these discounts, it is not because of foreigners. Vice versa.

Taxes too

Indeed, as a senior Bercy official tells our colleagues at Le Parisien, “ In any case, if they fill up in France, they pay taxes on every liter […] This is always more money in the state treasury“. However, while VAT revenues are expected to increase by €3 billion in 2022, the cost of rebates will be significantly higher. The state would indeed lose approximately 4 billion euros.
