Germany: fuel prices soar as discounts end Auto Plus news in your smartphone Auto Plus news in your inbox

A few weeks ago, on June 1 to be precise, the German government decided to introduce a small discount on the price of fuel, about 30 cents for gasoline and 14 cents for diesel. A long-awaited little boost, although the situation is also very difficult for our neighbors across the Rhine. Indeed, the price of oil has increased for everyone because of the war in Ukraine. But in Germany, the government decided to deal with the problem by also deciding to lower taxes. An idea from which our state authorities, for their part, refuse, believing that it is not sufficiently beneficial for the state. However, now we also have a small discount until the end of the year.

Rising prices

With our German neighbors, this little help has ended 1st of September, the date from which our discount of 30 centimes began. To say the least, the cancellation of the discount quickly made itself felt at German service stations. Indeed, the price of fuel rose sharply, and at midnight on September 1, the cost of unleaded gasoline 95 rose from 1.93 euros per liter to 2.28 euros. Absolutely amazing! Unleaded 98 petrol is now up to €2.40, which was then the same amount as diesel which was still showing at €2.23, much higher than here. A real flash, which clearly does not suit motorists.

The happiness of cross-border passengers

But some managed to find a way out. It border, who can then go to our French service stations to also take advantage of the discount. Indeed, this applies to everyone, whether French or foreign motorists. Not everyone likes that, and some elected officials decry the fact that public money shouldn’t be used to give discounts to drivers from other countries. In any case, our neighbors would be wrong to deprive themselves, because prices are extremely low right now.
