It’s an idea that comes up regularly, and has even been practiced by some motorists for years: driving in frying oil. And for good reasons, this alternative fuel is much cheaper, and above all, it is not taxed in the same way as petrol or diesel, and also works perfectly fine. Except it’s strictly forbidden. Not for technical reasons, but only because it brings absolutely nothing to the state, since it is not taxed. However, a few weeks ago, ecologists fromEELV made a sensible suggestion: allow motorists to drive on oil while fuel prices are at their highest. This measure was unanimously approved by the National Assembly. A little hope for all the drivers forced to cut their trips short due to gas prices.

Canceled event

But at the end of the day, that’s why you won’t be able to go to the nearest fast food restaurant to collect some frying oil and roll with it. Really, Constitutional Council just canceled this event. According to him, this has nothing to do with the voted text of the law on purchasing power. While Julien Bayou, EELV’s national secretary, recognizes the Council’s sovereign authority, he still plans to appeal the decision. Therefore, all is not lost. He then clarifies that he will return to the levy during Finance Bill 2023. In this regard, the customs code could be changed, thus making the use of frying oil legal, which is not currently the case.

Prohibited practice

Indeed, while frying oil has many benefits, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, its use is prohibited because it is absorbed tax fraud. In the case of a customs check (the police and gendarmerie do not have the authority to deal with such an offense), you risk receiving a large fine. Also, in the event of an accident, your insurer may come against you. Indeed, cars are insured only on legal fuel. Otherwise, you face serious problems, such as denial of compensation or even termination of your contract.
