Germany: Bahn and GDL train drivers’ union reaches wage agreement
March 25, 2024
German train drivers’ union GDL said on Monday it had reached a pay deal with Deutsche Bahn, ending a bitter labor dispute that led to several strikes and even legal challenges.
He said more details would be released on Tuesday.
Six rounds of negotiations, a series of strikes, failed mediations and legal challenges have accompanied the disagreement in recent months.
But the two sides recently returned to the negotiating table, with the GDL agreeing to a strike-free period during the renewal of talks, and this appears to have led to an agreement.
Several other labor disputes, especially involving German airports and the country’s largest airline, Lufthansa, remain unresolved.
The various disputes have combined to regularly create weeks of disruption to common public transport in the country, sometimes affecting up to two modes of transport at the same time.
