The social network Facebook appears to be suffering from a massive outage on Tuesday afternoon, with users reporting problems with both their Facebook account and access to Facebook Messenger.
The problems appear to have started around 5pm on Tuesday, when users reported being suddenly kicked out of their Facebook and Facebook Messenger accounts without being able to log back in.
Users are reporting that the Facebook platform tells them they entered the wrong password when they try to re-login to their accounts. The problem seems to persist even after changing the password and is related to a general Facebook glitch.
DownDetector, a website that tracks technical problems reported by major social media platforms in real time, recorded a sharp increase in complaints about the Facebook platform becoming unavailable on Wednesday around 5:00 p.m.
65% of complaints are related to connecting to a Facebook account, 30% to connecting to a server, and 5% to the Facebook mobile app, although it’s possible that the differences are due to confusion surrounding access to services.
Problems with Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp
DownDetector also recorded a sudden increase in complaints against the Instagram and WhatsApp platforms, which are also owned by the Meta Platforms group founded and led by Mark Zuckerberg, around 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
To date, the website DownDetector has recorded 300,000 complaints about Facebook outages and 47,000 complaints about Instagram.
Meta Platforms has not yet officially responded to this situation.
The last time Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp went down at the same time was during the Meta global outage in October 2021.
Then Meta services were unavailable for 6-7 hours.
The news is updated.
