According to a military source and Iranian media, five members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, including two senior officials, were killed Saturday during an Israeli raid on a building in Damascus, AFP reported.
The strike destroyed a four-story building in the Mazeh district where a “meeting of pro-Iranian leaders” was taking place, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSHR), a non-governmental organization with an extensive network of sources in war-torn Syria. .
In recent weeks, Israel, Iran’s arch-enemy, has been accused of killing a senior Iranian official in Syria and a second Hamas official in Lebanon in targeted operations, raising fears of an expansion of its war against the Palestinian Islamist movement from Gaza.
In a statement, the Revolutionary Guards, Iran’s ideological army, accused Israel of carrying out the attack on Damascus using “fighter jets”. According to them, five of their “military advisers” and “members of the Syrian forces” were killed in the attack.
According to the Iranian news agency Mehr, it is about “the head of the intelligence service of the Syrian Guard and his deputy, as well as two other members of this force.”
Speaking to AFP, the Israeli military said it does not “comment on foreign media reports.”
“The death toll rose to ten after bodies were found still under the rubble,” OSDH director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.
In Damascus, the official Syrian news agency Sana only confirmed the attack on a residential building in Maza, blaming Israel.
