NATO intends to mobilize 90,000 soldiers for a maneuver aimed at deterring Russian aggression, as part of the largest exercise organized by the North Atlantic Alliance since the end of the Cold War, the DPA news agency reported, cited by Agerpres.

According to information obtained on Thursday by Germany’s DPA agency, the scenario for the Steadfast Defender exercise, which is due to begin in February, is a Russian attack on allied territory, triggering Article 5 of the NATO Collective Defense Treaty.

Article 5 has been invoked only once, following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States by al-Qaeda.

In 2018, the largest NATO exercises since the Cold War were organized. Called Trident Juncture, the exercise, which involved approximately 51,000 soldiers, took place mostly in Norway.
