Amazon.com will cut several hundred jobs in its streaming and studio operations, the company said in an internal memorandum on Wednesday, as the companies expand on 2,024 massive job cuts made over the past two years, Reuters reported, according to News.ro.
Employees at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios in the Americas who will be laid off were notified on Wednesday, and in most other regions by the end of the week.
The online retail giant cut more than 27,000 jobs last year as part of a wave of layoffs in the U.S. tech sector after the industry ramped up work during the pandemic.
“We have identified opportunities to reduce or cease investment in certain areas while increasing our investment and focusing on the content and product initiatives that have the greatest impact,” Mike Hopkins, senior vice president of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, told employees in memo seen by Reuters.
More expensive ad-free streaming subscription to Prime Video
The company has spent heavily in recent years to bolster its media business, including an $8.5 billion deal for MGM and about $465 million for Prime Video’s 2022 first season of Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
Amazon is also set to launch ads on Prime Video, as well as a more expensive ad-free subscription in some markets, similar to moves by rivals Netflix and Walt Disney.
After full job cuts in 2022 and 2023, many companies are now focusing on individual projects and divisions, re-prioritizing their resources.
Amazon recently cut several jobs at its Alexa voice assistant division, while Microsoft cut some staff at its LinkedIn professional network.
Amazon’s Twitch is planning to lay off 500 employees, or about 35% of its workforce, according to an article on Tuesday.
