
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on Wednesday disapproved of the statement of the British Foreign Minister David Cameron, who suggested that Serbia is a satellite country of Russia, Tanjug and EFE news agencies reported.
Serbia is an independent and sovereign country and not a protectorate of Russia, Great Britain, the United States, Germany or any other country, President Vučić said during a visit to the House of Russia, respectively, the Russian Center of Culture and Science, reports Agerpres.
“Serbia is proud of its independence, and that’s why I’m disappointed by British Foreign Secretary Cameron’s statement that Serbia is a protectorate of Russia, as well as the narrative that we’re destabilizing the region,” the Serb said. president.
“Of course, many people will see you as an obstacle if you pursue your own policy and because of this policy you disobey their orders,” Vucic said. “We will continue to have our own independent policy, including towards the Russian Federation and many others,” he assured.
Serbia is a traditional ally of Russia and has not joined Western sanctions against the country, despite pressure from some European leaders who believe that if Serbia wants to become a member of the EU, it should apply European sanctions against Russia.
Referring to Western criticism of maintaining ties with Moscow, the Serbian president emphasized that “friendship proves itself in difficult times.”
For his part, the Russian ambassador in Belgrade, Oleksandr Botan-Hartsenko, said that Russia “never requires partner countries to be pro-Russian, but to be guided by their own national interests, as this is the best for bilateral relations.”
