Stellantis: thieves come to the rescue right in the factory parking lot Auto Plus news in your smartphone Auto Plus news in your inbox

Why steal a car on the street or from a private garage, when it can be done directly at the factory of a large automobile concern?

It’s brave, especially given the security measures these factories must have, but some have tried.

A well-established operation of thieves

Indeed, as Le Parisien reported, in a nighttime operation worthy of an action movie, people broke into the Stellantis grounds in Poissy (Yvelines) on Christmas night. The incident was reported around 1:30 am. when seven cars were stolen on the logistics platform of the subcontractor Ceva Logistics, formerly Gefco, specializing in transport.

The thieves took a “brave” approach, to say the least, using two stolen cars to break down the gates of the site at post D, at the entrance. The last car in line, a Peugeot 308, was blocked by a police car and ended up in a concrete block. Despite this obstacle, the driver managed to escape.

Several cases have already been recorded

Contrary to what one would believe, this is not a one-off act, far from it. According to Le Parisien, similar deliveries were observed in recent months. It is only one step away from this to establishing a link between the possible coordination of teams familiar with the locations and conditions of vehicle storage.

Stellantis recently doubled the number of guards on its sites. It should also be noted that theft of spare parts is also a regular occurrence at the plant, with agents regularly conducting random, if not systematic, checks every time a vehicle leaves.

This series of thefts appears to be organized by organized gangs, as these thieves are not only targeting the Stellantis site, but also Renault, in Flints, in Ivelin.

The case echoes other similar incidents, including a series of thefts from cars parked in the Poissy factory parking lot in late 2019, as well as vehicle thefts on the property in 2018 and 2017.

Another case of theft for Stellantis, this time a recent one: the theft of a prototype of the future Lancia Ypsilon, which ended its journey in a pond. The result of the race: an unusable prototype, a car exposed to the general public before its launch, and a sabotaged communication campaign.
