Giant US chipmaker Nvidia will release a slower version of its video game processor in China to comply with export restrictions imposed by the United States, CNBC reports.

A product page on Nvidia’s website for Chinese consumers shows that the new Nvidia RTX 4090D, which a representative said will be released in January, according to Reuters, has 11 percent fewer “CUDA” (Compute Unified Device Architecture) cores than chip version. which are sold outside of China.

RTX is Nvidia’s line of advanced gaming graphics or graphics processors.

Nvidia was not available for comment when contacted by CNBC, but a company spokesperson told Reuters that the chip “was designed to fully comply with the US government’s export restrictions to China.”

Nvidia was “extensively involved in discussions with the US government” during the development of the product, a spokesman told Reuters.

Washington has imposed restrictions on exports to China that prevent companies from that country from accessing some of the most advanced chips from American firms.

The export rules primarily apply to chips that power AI applications, but gaming-oriented processors are also at stake, as many of them can also be used in AI.

Nvidia’s RTX 4090 is on the list of banned chips made in the US, according to documents the company filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on October 17.

Nvidia says on its website that the RTX 4090D chip uses AI to improve performance. Nvidia shares have soared in 2023, tripling since the start of the year.
