Cyprus is one of the Mediterranean countries where summer temperatures are very high, which leads to an increase in the number of forest fires. New technologies such as 5G, artificial intelligence and drones can detect fires before they start. In this way, people’s lives and houses in the vicinity of the forest can be protected.

At the opening of the event, Andreas Christou, Deputy Director General of the Department of Forestry, delivered a speech on behalf of the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulidis, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Petros Xenophontos and Director General of the Department of Forestry, Charalambos Alexandernoting:This initiative shows the high degree of participation of Huawei Technologies in the protection of forests. There is no room for procrastination in firefighting, and no one is left behind. We are happy to see private sector action in this direction, especially through Huawei’s innovative Smart Green Village fire detection program..”

,,Huawei has developed a drone that detects smoke and fire in response to fires in semi-mountainous and mountainous areas. The device works with the help of artificial intelligence under the coverage of Cyta’s 5G network, which contributes to outstanding results. Such initiatives play an important role in the development of smart cities in Cyprus. When modern challenges are solved with the help of new generation technologies, the quality of life of our citizens will improve exponentially.” gets up Philippos Hadjizacharias, Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy.

Chief Commercial Officer of Cyta, George Metsakisstated: ,,Cyta’s 5G network will be a major tool in the fire detection project, providing high-speed connectivity with low latency, important aspects of real-time data transmission. Looking to the future, the development of the 5G network opens up unlimited possibilities in the development of smart cities. This is a big change and we are excited to be at the forefront of this revolutionary technology.”.

Radoslav Kedzia, Vice President of the European region of Huawei, emphasized that Huawei will continue to make efforts to implement new initiatives and solutions that can contribute to solving social and environmental problems both in Cyprus and throughout Europe: “Technology should not be in opposition” . to nature On the contrary, it should help her thrive. We believe that emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud and 5G can be rapidly integrated and applied across industries. This contributes to digital transformation and long-term socio-economic development, bringing significant benefits to the entire society.”

The event was held in cooperation with Darwin’s Circle under the theme “Vienna Tech for Green Initiative”, a program dedicated to the development of technologies and solutions to achieve sustainable development plans. During discussions with experts, Nikolaus Pelinka, founder of Darwin’s Circle, emphasizes the significant role of technology in the transition to the better: “At Darwin’s Circle, we believe that technology and innovation are the most important tools for a sustainable future. Together with our loyal partner Huawei, as well as other companies and institutions, we launched this initiative Vienna Tech4Green. We focus on the important role of new technologies in reducing carbon emissions, protecting the environment and creating a better world. We are going to discuss the necessary measures to achieve our goals.”

A fire detection system was first introduced in 2022 in Athens, Greece. Since then, it has been tested and improved, so this year it is being introduced in Cyprus, a country facing the problem of forest fires. The implementation of the system in Cyprus is part of a long-term program of social contributions under the auspices of “Smart & Green Village”. It aims to provide widespread connectivity and education in rural Cyprus.
