Two daily newspapers in eastern France, L’Est Républicain and Vosges Matin, will test the use of ChatGPT “within a strict framework of checking and correcting the content presented by our local press correspondents”, their owner, the Ebra group, announced on Wednesday, according to AFP.

This is the first time a French media group has announced that it is using generative artificial intelligence in its regular editorial work. Ebra Group (Crédit Mutuel) is a major regional press group with nine publications covering 23 departments in eastern France.

The terms and conditions are due to be explained to staff on Thursday so they can be implemented in the weeks following the consultation. Management assures that this will not affect work.

“The emergence of generative artificial intelligence in newsrooms is inevitable, and our goal is to anticipate this by testing the tools we have for news processing,” explains Christophe Mahier, CEO of the two publications.

“Just like the spell-checking tools our journalists have used for years, we are simply testing the ‘office features’ of the ChatGPT artificial intelligence tool developed by US company OpenAI,” he added in a statement to AFP.

In a press release, the National Union of Journalists (SNJ) said it “will not leave the keys to information in the hands of computers.” “Norms of journalistic ethics are not outdated. They have to be imposed on AI, that is non-negotiable,” he insisted.
