Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi announced late Thursday in his daily address to the nation that a “major international meeting” would be held on the island of Malta later this month regarding his peace formula, a ten-point proposal to end the war that calls for the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine, reports EFE on Friday.
“I informed President (American Joe) Biden about the big international meeting on the peace formula, which will be held this month in Malta,” the Ukrainian head of state said in his speech, in which he referred to a telephone conversation with his colleague. American
According to him, the United States supports the implementation of the peace formula.
Zelensky also referred to a discussion with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday, in which he welcomed “the active participation of the UN in global efforts on a peace formula.”
According to the Ukrainian president, the UN is “ready to send its representative to the next meeting”, at which, as he explained, the “advisors” of the presidents or governments that support the document will gather again.
The meeting in Malta will be the third organized by Ukraine in this format. Dozens of advisers to governments and presidents of many countries took part in the previous two meetings held this year in Denmark and Saudi Arabia. They were convened by the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak.
Ukraine wants to organize a summit to approve the peace formula proposed by President Zelensky, which will be attended by as many world leaders as possible, but many of the leaders who sent their advisers to previous meetings have close relations with Russia and have not shown their availability in this regard.
Among the points of Zelenskyi’s peace plan are the return of prisoners of war and civilians, environmental protection, nuclear, energy and food security. The key point is the restoration of the territorial integrity of Ukraine within the borders recognized by the UN.
Kyiv is looking for support in the countries of the so-called Global South, which do not want to sever relations with Russia or condemn the invasion of some of these points.
Critics of Zelenskyi’s peace formula consider it unworkable due to the fact that it presupposes the complete withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine. (Agerpress)
