Oscar-winning American actor George Clooney and other Hollywood stars have offered the SAG-AFTRA actors’ union $150 million in a bid to end a strike approaching its 100th day, Reuters and Agerpres reported.
Their proposal, confirmed Thursday by a Clooney spokesman, would give the union an additional $150 million over three years and could fund additional health benefits. Clooney also said that the stars will receive their remaining royalties only after lower-earning actors receive their royalties.
“A lot of high-paid actors want to be part of the solution,” Clooney told Deadline, which first reported the news.
“We think it’s fair that we pay the union more,” he emphasized. A SAG-AFTRA spokesman did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
SAG-AFTRA members have been on strike since July, when they joined earlier union action by Hollywood screenwriters.
There is a blockade in Hollywood
While the writers struck a deal with the major studios in late September, talks between the actors’ union and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) reached an impasse last week, dashing hopes of a quick resolution.
The actors’ strike, which will enter its 100th day on Saturday, has disrupted film and television production and put thousands of crew members and actors out of work.
The film and television writers earlier this month ratified a newly proposed three-year contract, ending a strike after 148 days.
But SAG-AFTRA’s wage demands, as well as AI protections, go further than those of their fellow screenwriters.
Actors fear that artificial intelligence will be used to clone their voice and image without their consent and without payment.
