The President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Odile Renaud-Basso is arriving in Bucharest this week, where he will hold talks with President Klaus Iohannis, Prime Minister Marcel Cholaku, Head of the National Bank of Ukraine. Romania, Mugur Isarescu, as well as with representatives of environmental business. Renault-Basso will speak at the Three Seas Initiative summit on Wednesday. The EBRD is very interested in the renewable energy sector in Romania and supports the introduction of contracts for difference to support green energy producers.

The visit of the EBRD president coincides with the period when the Romanian authorities are preparing to implement a large plan of measures to reduce budget costs.

According to the EBRD press release, the EBRD has currently invested 10.5 billion euros in Romania, especially in infrastructure and the financial sector, our country ranks sixth in the bank’s list of investment destinations.

Last year, 61% of the EBRD’s investments in Romania, totaling 709 million euros, were directed to the green economy.

Focus on renewable energy sources

This is Odile Renaud-Basso’s first visit to Romania as EBRD president, a few months after PSD leader Marcel Colacu became prime minister.

EBRD officials note that since then, Romania has made significant progress in the energy market, with the intention of launching tenders under the Contracts for Difference (CfD) support scheme for renewable energy, an initiative supported by the EBRD.

The 2,000MW offshore wind and solar projects will be supported under the CfD scheme for 15 years, with the tender winners announced in November.

“The development of renewable energy is a priority for EBRD investments in Romania,” says the bank’s president. “The EBRD is ready to support other similar initiatives to help Romania become resilient and achieve its goals under the EU Recovery and Resilience Fund.”

Reno-Basso will meet with President Caus Iohannis, Prime Minister Marcel Colaku, the Ministers of Finance, Energy and Transport, as well as the head of the National Bank of Romania, Mugur Iserescu.

She will also hold discussions with investors, the business community and representatives of civil society.

On Wednesday, Renault-Basso will speak at the Three Seas Initiative summit on the war in Ukraine.

The EBRD has pledged to invest 3 billion euros by the end of this year to support the economies of Ukraine and neighboring war-torn countries.
