Gabriela Ruse and Ana Bohdan stopped in the first round of the US Open 2023 after losing to Karolina Pliskova (former WTA ranking leader) and Sofia Kenin (Grand Slam winner) respectively.

Gabriela Ruse lost to Karolina Pliskova at US Open 2023

Pliskova, a 2016 finalist at Flushing Meadows, needed an hour and a half to overcome the Romanian, who came from the qualifiers, 6-1, 6-4.

Carolina had 11 aces and 21 game winners (3 and 11 for Gabriela), made fewer unforced errors (20 – 22) and was a player who dictated the tempo.

Ana Bohdan was eliminated from US Open 2023 by Sofia Kenin

Ana (60 WTA) was the higher ranked player in this match, but Sofia (101 WTA) has had a great run at the Grand Slams in 2020, winning the Australian Open and reaching the Roland Garros final.

Kenin won in two close sets, 7-6(2), 6-4. The match lasted one hour and 52 minutes.

  • Pliskova (25th favorite) will meet Frenchwoman Clara Burrell (62nd WTA) in the next round, and Kenin – with Daria Kasatkina (13th).
  • For participation in the main draw of the US Open, Gabriela Ruse and Ana Bohdan will each receive 10 points in the WTA rating and $81,500 each.
  • Two representatives from Romania have qualified for the second round: Sorana Kirstya (match with Anna Kalinska) and Patritsia Tzig (she will meet with Jessica Pegula). Iryna also left the competition in the inaugural round.
