A huge amount of money will be spent over four years and is intended for the purchase of weapons, ammunition and other military equipment.

The proposal, put forward by Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy chief, is part of efforts to provide long-term support to Kyiv.

Last year’s decision by the EU to finance the supply of arms to the war-torn country was a turning point for the 27-member bloc.

Before that, for decades, the EU focused on economic and political cooperation and avoided involvement in armed conflicts.
