The European Commission wants online platforms to clearly identify content – images, sounds, texts – created by artificial intelligence (AI) to combat the risks of disinformation, announced Vice President of the EU Executive Commission for Values and Transparency Vera Jourova. on Monday, AFP reports Agerpres.
With such a request, the EC representative addressed the signatories of the EU Code of Good Practice against disinformation, with whom she met on Monday in Brussels. The code, which is not legally binding, brings together about 40 organizations on a voluntary basis, including major platforms such as Facebook, Google, YouTube and TikTok, with Twitter recently leaving the group.
“Signatories that integrate AI generators into their services, such as Microsoft’s Bing Chat and Google’s Bard, must integrate the necessary safeguards so that these services cannot be used by malicious actors who generate disinformation,” said Vera Jourova.
On the other hand, the EC representative added, signatories that have services that may spread disinformation generated by artificial intelligence should implement technology to recognize this content and clearly notify users about it.
From August 25, the largest platforms, which bring together more than 45 million active users in the EU, will be subject to obligations under the Digital Services Act (DSA). This regulation provides for “reference to a visible sign” to ensure that “audio or video content produced or processed is recognisable.”
But the European Commission wants to “immediately” introduce this labeling as part of a code of good practice to combat disinformation.
Among other things, the European Union is negotiating specific AI legislation that would impose transparency obligations on editorial content generators such as ChatGPT, but these discussions between member states and MEPs are still ongoing.
