After the poor rains winter and relatively dry spring for most of the country (except in the west), May 2023 proved to be extremely wet.
According to the records of the network of automatic weather stations of the National Observatory of Athens / Meteo.gr, high rainfall (map 1) occurred in the Ionian, continental, Crete and Dodecanese, and in some areas the number of days with precipitation (map 2) it was the largest on record since 2008.
In particular, in Florina and Trikala there were 20 days of rainfall, in Ioannina 19, in Kilkis 18, in Drama 17, in Thessaloniki, Amphiklea and Tripoli 15 days. There were also 11 days of rain in Livadia, Pyrgos and Sparta.
The National Observatory of Athens notes that May is a month when you can usually see a few showers and thunderstorms in the form of instability, especially during the midday and evening hours.
It is significant that locally high precipitation and a large number of rainy days were also observed in 2007, 2011, 2016, 2017 and 2018.
