Twitter has decided to abandon the EU’s set of rules. against online disinformation, but “his obligations remain,” European Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton said today in a post on Elon Musk’s social network.
“You can run, but you can’t hide. In addition to voluntary obligations, the fight against disinformation will become a legal obligation under the DSA (Digital Services Act) of August 25,” he recalled.
“Our teams will be ready to enforce the law,” he warned.
The European Code of Practice against Online Disinformation, developed in 2018, brings together about 30 participants from Internet giants such as Meta, Google, Twitter, Microsoft and TikTok, as well as smaller platforms such as advertisers, event checkers and non- government organizations.
The signatories helped draft the text, which contains about 40 commitments aimed at better working with the fact-checking industry and de-advertising fake news sites.
The departure of Twitter did not come as a surprise to the services of Thierry Breton. Since buying the social network six months ago, billionaire Elon Musk has loosened restrictions on problematic content and appears to have sided with voices notorious for spreading misinformation on the platform.
“If (Elon Musk) is not serious about the code, it might be better to leave it,” commented yesterday, Friday, the official representative of the European Commission.
