His municipality Paris announced today that it intends to drastically limit short-term rentals of furnished apartments such as Airbnbin tourist areas of the city.
“There will be apartments in Paris where the construction of new tourist facilities will be prohibited,” said Deputy Mayor of Paris Emmanuel Gregoire, adding that at this stage the measure will not apply to occasional rentals, that is, those that do not exceed 120 days a year.
According to conservative estimates, there are currently about 43,000 furnished apartments available for short-term rent in Paris. Also, over the past two years, every eighth apartment reserved for business has become a furnished apartment for short-term rental.
In 2021, the city of Paris sued the Airbnb platform for renting spaces that were not registered as residential properties. The court sentenced the platform to a fine of 8 million euros.
