The first set belonged to the eighth favorite of the tournament, who won easily and it seemed that the next set would bring him qualification.

The second set ended in a tiebreak where Zhang, despite being down 3-0, managed to win 7-5.

The decider was tied again, with Fritz missing three match points and the Chinese taking a surprise victory after 10-8.
