Gambling turnover jump in the first two months

A double-digit increase was recorded in total turnover (TGR) gambling for the first two months of the current year compared to the corresponding period of 2022.

According to her Gambling Supervision and Control Committee (EEEP), in the period from January to February 2023, compared with the corresponding two months of 2022, the turnover of this market increased by 35%, to 5.8 billion euros. Online companies account for the largest contribution with €4.3bn, followed by OPAP (Vlt agencies and slot machines) with 1.1 billion euros. In the first two months of 2022, the TGR of online companies and OPAP rose to 3.1 billion and 897.5 million euros, respectively. It is worth noting that for the whole of 2022, the gambling turnover amounted to 29.2 billion euros, an increase of 28.8% and 83% compared to 2021 and 2019, respectively.

Compared to the corresponding two months of 2022, turnover increased by 35% to 5.8 billion euros.

During the first two months of 2023, the total gross revenue (GGR – obtained by deducting attributed profits from gambling) that enters the company also increased. In the first two months of 2023, they grew by 15.6%, to around 431.2 million euros. ISP GGR increased by 24.2% to 144.5 million euros. A significant increase of 51.5% was recorded in player tax, which amounted to €54.1m in the first two months of 2023. As EEEP comments in its latest monthly newsletter, an independent body immediately after the establishment of an organized purchase of the game, “having considered, at the request of providers, with in-depth research, the question of the” maximum amount “that could be played in some games.

He found that it was too low and the reason for this was, among other things, driving many players into an illegal network. A simplification of it was proposed and introduced, resulting in many players returning to the legal network.”

In a broader sense, attention is also focused on the unification of the casinos of Rio, Alexandroupolis and Corfu. Of the three, the first is reopening, which for a long time remained closed by court decision after the appeal of employees. The casinos in Rio and Alexandroupolis, which have come under the control of Glafka Capital, have submitted applications for confirmation of consolidation agreements, which are awaiting a court decision.

Due to the mobility of the gambling sector, at the end of March last year, a Presidential Decree (36/2023) was signed, defining the conditions for the transfer of the Parnita casino to the Dilavery area in Marousi (opposite the Golden Hall). In essence, it is an integrated entertainment complex that also includes a casino, notes EEEP, which “supported the investment from the very beginning and in a short time, in 2021, completed the difficult task of evaluating the application file and recommending the move.” as stated in the operator’s prospectus.
