Sudan: army and RSF agree on three-day truce to mark Muslim holiday

The Sudanese army said it had agreed to a three-day ceasefire from Friday on the occasion of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr, which ends the holy month of Ramadan.

“The armed forces hope that the rebels will comply with all demands for a ceasefire and stop all military movements,” the army said in a statement. Earlier Friday, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which have been fighting the army across Sudan for nearly a week, agreed to a 72-hour ceasefire.

Previous ceasefire declarations by the opposing sides remained unfulfilled.

Against this backdrop, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for a ceasefire in Sudan “for at least three days” over Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, but leaders of Sudan’s rival military have shown reluctance to negotiate. together.

At least 400 people have been killed and thousands more injured since Saturday, when a power struggle between generals Abdel Fattah al-Buran and Mohamed Hamdan Daghlo, or Hameti, escalated into open war.

The fiercest fighting is taking place in the Khartoum metropolitan area and in the state of Darfur, where the scars of a decades-long war that theoretically ended three years ago still remain.

Dead UN employee

A staff member of the International Organization for Migration was killed today in the fighting in Sudan, the director general of the UN agency said.

“It is with a heavy heart that I acknowledge the death of a dedicated International Organization for Migration worker in Sudan this morning when the private vehicle in which he was traveling with his family south of the city of El Obeid burned down. between two belligerents,” Antonio Vitorino said.

“I am deeply saddened by the death of our colleague and join his wife, newborn child and our team in Sudan in mourning,” Vittorino added.

The International Organization for Migration said a 49-year-old Sudanese worker was traveling with his family in the El Obeid area, a city southwest of the capital Khartoum, when he was caught in the crossfire.

Three employees of the UN World Food Program (WFP) were also killed last week in fighting that has been raging in Sudan since mid-April between the regular army and paramilitaries.
