His creation of a party under the EAN brand last fall did not arouse interest even among his former colleagues in the Supreme Court, where he filed a corresponding application. His subsequent move, about twenty days ago, to apply to the Supreme Court to suspend the EAN, went almost unnoticed.

His friends at the Supreme Court, who learned of his intention to suspend his fledgling party, were unaware that he was closing one door to open another, as he then publicly announced his intention to lead the party founded by Elias Scarfi.

Kanellopoulos’ move, as one would expect, activated intense political reflexes. But in the judiciary, and especially in the Supreme Court, where he served for a long time as a deputy prosecutor, his intention to run for elections with the Kasidiaris party caused a shock.

But who is Anastasios Kanellopoulos who wants to lead a party founded by a former Golden Dawn MP sentenced to 13 years in prison?

The Honorary Deputy Prosecutor of the Supreme Court belongs to a well-known legal family originating from Kertezi Kalavriton, with two brothers Vice-Presidents of the Supreme Court, Dimitris Kanellopoulos, Honorary Chief Justice, and Theodoros, Acting Vice-President of the Supreme Court. , who two years ago was one of the few who was provisionally elected to the post of President of the Supreme Court, and in the upcoming elections for the post of head of the judiciary next June, he again belongs to the number of elected senior judges. The third brother of the family is the famous lawyer Athanasios Kanellopoulos, as well as three sisters who complete the large family.

Kanellopoulos has come a long way in law, he was the head of the prosecutor’s office of Athens and Patras, he reached the Supreme Court and for a long time he was in charge of sports on behalf of the prosecutor’s office of the Supreme Court. However, he appears to be determined to lead Ilias Kasidiaris’ Hellenic Party, even after the public disapproval of his intentions by his siblings in a media statement.

Information “K” from his entourage indicates that the processes to amend the constitution of the Kasidiaris party are already underway so that it is ready to apply for participation in the elections to the Supreme Court, and Anastasios Kanellopoulos himself, speaking to his people, refuses to be the one who will legally represent the party’s application for participation in the elections in the supreme court.

The decision of the Honorary Deputy Prosecutor of the Supreme Court, Anastasio Kanellopoulos, to lead the party of Kasidiaris has caused, in addition to the obvious political upheaval, great concern in the judiciary and especially in the Supreme Court, which will bear the heavy burden of any decision. . The Supreme Court, according to “K”, sounded the alarm, as many considered that any decision should have such weight as to leave no room for doubt, in view of the high probability of a second election contest.

In this situation, the government accepted proposals and, as a result, supplemented the current law so that, for the statement of all parties and, first of all, for the fate of the Kasidiari party, the competent department of the Supreme Court (A1) made a decision in full, that is, with the participation of all nine supreme judges included in its composition, and not just five, as it has been until now.
In order to increase the composition of the competent department of the Supreme Court, the government’s amendment will be put to the vote in the coming days, when the last bill of the current government is determined for discussion in Parliament, before Parliament ceases its work in connection with the elections.

The agreement, while of a legal technical nature, is considered critical because it will also allow judges in Division A1 of the Supreme Court to decide on the legality of participating in partisan elections. All parties and political formations will submit the necessary supporting documents to the Supreme Court by May 2, when the relevant term of the electoral legislation expires.

It is expected that the fateful decision will be made no later than the evening of May 5, when it will be finally clear whether this party will participate in the upcoming elections.
