Transport strike in Germany causes major disruptions
Almost all planes, trains and buses in Germany were grounded on Monday after a 24-hour nationwide strike began at midnight.
Strike preparations had already caused major disruptions to weekend travel.
Two major unions are deadlocked in negotiations with public sector employers in various transport sectors – including rail, local public transport and airport ground staff – and have organized the strike to coincide with the start of a third round of talks.
Frank Werneke, head of the Verdi union, which represents some 2.5 million public sector workers, spoke of the biggest strike in decades.
