Seven hundred firefighters and dozens of aircraft were sent to extinguish the fire, and 1,500 people were evacuated from a village north of Valencia. Some of them said that they were forced to leave their animals.
The local newspaper Las Provincias wrote that a spark from a logging machine may have been the cause of the fire.
This year’s dry winter in southern Europe has raised fears of a repeat of last year’s devastating fires. The Spanish coast will be drier and warmer than usual this spring, according to the AEMET meteorological service.
In 2022, the black year of wildfires in Europe, Spain has become the most affected country on the continent. According to the European Forest Fire Information System, a total of 493 forest fires have scorched vast areas.
