In 2022, the Romanian Motor Vehicle Registry checked from a technical point of view more than 76,000 vehicles in traffic throughout the country. After inspections, RAR inspectors found that 45% of them had serious technical deficiencies, and 5,000 vehicles posed an immediate threat of road accidents.

Last year, from a technical point of view, 76,440 vehicles were inspected in traffic, inspectors estimated that 5,262 represented an immediate danger of an accident.

According to the results of inspections, contamination was found in approximately 6,000 vehicles (7.86%) of those inspected.

The most inconsistencies were found in:

  • electric lighting and signaling installation (27.62%);
  • emissions of pollutants (22.65%);
  • axles, wheels, tires and suspension (13.86%);
  • visibility (12.6%)
  • chassis and chassis fasteners (11.85%).

The RAR states that the results of road traffic checks do NOT reflect the general state of the vehicle fleet in Romania, as the mixed RAR-Police crews stop for inspection only those vehicles that are likely to be defective.

About 3% of inspected vehicles had problems with confirmation of periodic technical inspection – fake, expired or canceled ITP.

According to the results of the joint control of the RAR and the traffic police during 2022, 25,690 sanctions were applied, 21,854 registration certificates were withdrawn, 264 vehicles were immobilized and 408 ITPs were canceled.

In Bucharest and Ilfov County, 4,887 vehicles were inspected during the specified period. Of these, 78.6% had various technical or documentary inconsistencies, and 1,200 (24.56%) posed an immediate risk of an accident. Of the total number of vehicles stopped, 18.93% of cases were found to have pollution deficiencies, 11.58% had identification problems and 4.89% had invalid, expired or canceled ITPs.

According to the results of joint inspections conducted by the State Police and the Traffic Police, 3,571 fines were imposed and 3,207 registration certificates were confiscated in this region.

In a situation where one of the measures taken was the withdrawal of the registration certificate, it can be re-obtained only after conducting a special technical inspection at RAR offices in the country.
